Note to Self

Note to self. Don’t go to a baseball game with five grandchildren age eight or under.

That’s what I did the other night, compliments of our state senator, Mike Nozzolio. It was supposed to be a fun night with my two daughters and at least some of their children. And it was fun. It just wasn’t for the baseball game, an instructional league game between the Geneva Twins and Olean Oilers.

The brood consisted of an eight year old girl, seven year old girl, two five year olds (boy and girl) and four month old boy. They lasted on the bleacher seats about … one batter. From there it was a yo yo of going to the bathroom, getting something to drink, “dropping” things under the bleachers so they could retrieve them and generally playing musical seats. By the end of the first inning, they migrated off to the area next to the bleachers to play duck, duck, goose or tag. By the second inning they were off exploring the first base side of McDonough Field and by the fourth frame, I had no idea where they were or what they were doing {good thing their moms had things under control}. It was probably better that way.

While we — well … they — didn’t get a chance to watch the game, we did have an opportunity to hang out. We started the night at McDonald’s {always a treat trying to figure out who got what, how to convince them to eat all their food … including the apples {which was actually the easiest task}, convincing them to eat before opening the toy and why the toy didn’t work}. Then it was off to the ball game … or at least the playground. We stopped for some pictures before the local grandkids said goodbye to our Ohio visitors.

On a scale of 1-10, the anticipated expectation ranked a low 1 or 2. But just getting together and allowing the grandkids to be, well, kids and interact together was priceless.

THOUGHT TO REMEMBER: Courtesy is contagious. Spread it.
