Five Minute Friday — Opportunity

I decided to try something new this year, write for five minutes on a specific prompt word. The initiative was started by Lisa-Jo Baker (http://lisajobaker.com/2013/01/five-minute-friday-opportunity-2/) who thought about writing and how often our perfectionism gets in the way of our words. And she figured, why not take five minutes and see what comes out: not a perfect post, not a profound post, just five minutes of focused writing.

I had been following her post for a couple of months last year, but hesitated because, well, most of the posts were from very talented young mothers and women and I wasn’t sure how an old geezer like me would fit in. So I asked Lisa-Jo, who cordially responded “You’re welcome to jump in and write along. We have a few other brave men who join now and again.”

The format is simple. Set the timer for five minutes and write. Don’t worry about mistakes, grammar, fonts or punctuation … just write from your mind and heart. Then, post and encourage others who have braved the exercise. In November — last time Lisa-Jo prompted, she took December off — 128 people joined in. Thus far this week, there have been 191 ahead of me.

The word for the week this week is OPPORTUNITY … so here goes. {clock starts now}

Opportunity is a chance to move forward. Often we think of it in seculart terms, but opportunity can also be available in out spiritual life. Sometimes we just have to look at what is being presented.

I have had many opportunities to grow over the years and there are more on the horizon. In addition to sharing this opportunity to write, I will be joining in a family on-line boible study focusing on the Matthew’s Gospel. It’s a great opportunity since the idea initiated from my children … although I know there is a Divine presence as well.

Often we squander opportunities because we just don;pt see them. We see tham as challenges or more work or whatever other excuse we choose and don’t see the hand of God in the everyday opportunities we face. We focus on what we think, what we see, what we are limited by and do..

End

To wrap up the thought …don’t see the possibilities, true possibilities, out there.

Well, that was my first venture for better or worse. It’s harder than you might think … but it’s a great discipline to organizing your thoughts!

THOUGGHT TO REMEMBER: When you have a good laugh, you activate the body’s natural tranquilizers that calm you and help you sleep better.

  1. You did great! And, yes, it is so easy to look at “Opportunity” and instead see “More Work”. It is so wonderful how God rewards our stepping out in the directions His opportunity provides though. I pray you experience much spiritual growth from your new online Bible study community… those opportunities are definitely uplifting and helpful as we walk with Him.

    God Bless!

    • Thank you. As i look back at the opportunities in my life, it’s not hard to see when I recognized the hand of God in that opportunity it was a blessing … when I relied on my own resources it was a disaster. Any successes I may have had was when my way conformed with His way. It then became Our way. Blessings to you in the new year.

    Guess I will laugh more in the evening.. !! Loved the 5 minute opportunity to hear your plan with your children. Awesome.

  3. Hi Joe, Welcome to 5 Minute Fridays. I am just beginning on this adventure, too. Loved your post. Keep it up. I love that you jumped in to a very “estrogen-rich” environment. Hopefully, more men will follow suit. This exercise is for everyone. ~jana

    • You’re right, five minutes is not a lot of time! One thing I learned from 40 years of marriage is men and women do not think the same {thank God, how boring it would be if they did}. Add in the fact most of you women are my daughters’ ages and I had some reservations. But universally, we’re also after the same prize — salvation through Jesus Christ. Saw your post(s) as well.Keep plugging along!!! Good work.

      • Thank you, Joe. So glad to have met you. You, too! Keep plugging along. I am learning that all of our voices and stories are important. I was really nervous when starting my blog in May. I just wondered what else I could possibly say that hadn’t already been said. But, due to you and many other encouraging friends and strangers, I continue writing and answering the call to claim that I am a writer. Thanks again,

    Hi! Great to read your post on Opportunity. I’m a little late posting. I haven’t quite got back in the groove of the Five Minute Friday writings yet. I will, the new one is posted now, for the next week but I already forgot what the prompt was. Oh,it’s Dive. I’ll do mine later in the morning I suppose. Just wanted to stop by and say I like your post for this past week. Thank you for sharing and I pray you’ll enjoy your study on Matthew with your kids. Shalom~
