Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.

The Light 
For many, freedom is defined
in what they’ll disallow
with slogans that they hide behind
and tropes where all must bow.
They seek now to take away
rights granted long ago.
In defense, they’ll quickly say
“The Founding Fathers didn’t know!”
They only thought of muzzle-loaders
and oppression by the Crown.
But these were citizen-soldiers,
and the tyrants were their own.
The rifle leaning at the shelf
defends the nation from itself.

Freedom is important But actions speak louder than words. Less than 1% of the population in this country is willing to serve in our military. Many people making speeches, saying freedom has to be defended, but the majority of the people making speeches don’t have the courage to make the sacrifice themselves.
I served a 3 year hitch in the US Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Warfare is horrific, and war is hell. I never want to experience anything like this again, as long as I live. I was fortunate, and I came home in relatively one piece. At the time, I thought I could come home and just be normal again. But I didn’t realize that I brought a ghost back with me. The ghost is called PTSD.
I finally went to the VA and asked for help. With medication and therapy, I eventually recovered, but it’s been a long hard road to walk down.
To be honest, I’m very leery of people who make speeches. Especially politicians. There is always someone pounding the war drums, perfectly willing to send our young military personnel off to some godforsaken far off place to die in some war. But they are unwilling to send their own children and grandchildren, and when they were of age, they wouldn’t send themselves. There is an old adage: Never ask anyone to do something, that you aren’t willing to do yourself. Words are cheap, and mean nothing if there is no personal courage behind the words.
